STRATHMORE, California — Strathmore’s public library has a local history that stretches back more than a century. Tulare County Library says residents petitioned for a library deposit station in December 1910, and the service opened in June 1911 in an unexpected location: Harry North’s barber shop.
The county’s official Strathmore Branch history records that the service became a formal branch of the Tulare County Library on July 1, 1913. Over the next decades it occupied several buildings as the community grew and local arrangements changed.
A succession of community spaces
According to the library’s timeline, the branch moved three times between 1912 and 1936, then occupied a Town and Country Club building on Balfour Street. The library later remained as a tenant after a local church purchased that building, before a new library building opened in February 1976.
The present Strathmore Branch address is 19646 Road 230, Strathmore, CA 93267. The county says that building was financed by revenue-sharing funds allocated by the Board of Supervisors and has since been renovated.
Why the history matters today
The branch’s unusual start illustrates how a public service can begin with modest community arrangements, rather than a purpose-built institution. For a small agricultural town, the persistence of a local library is also part of the record of civic participation and access to reading.
Readers who wish to research historic photographs, local documents or the library’s changing facilities should begin with the county’s official history and inquire about other public archives. The county’s account establishes the library timeline; it does not by itself document every cultural event or volunteer contribution over those decades.
Planning a visit
The Strathmore location page directs visitors needing assistance to the wider Tulare County Library network. The county-wide locations directory provides branch listings and schedules. Confirm available services, hours and contact arrangements before making a special trip; historical descriptions should not be mistaken for live information.
